Education

Standards:

In order to become a Registered Massage Therapist, certain requirements must be met regarding education. As stated by the Massage Therapy Association of Manitoba, a “minimum entry to practice education of 2200 hours of instruction, or approximately two years of academic and practical/clinical education based on an approved curriculum” is required. Most other associations, such as the ones I have listed here adhere to this same standard.

Colleges in Winnipeg which currently meet this criteria and are recognized by MTAM include:
Wellington College of Remedial Massage Therapies, Inc.
Massage Therapy College of Manitoba
Robertson College
Hua Xia Acupuncture, Massage, Herb College

Most full-time massage therapy courses are two years in duration; Wellington College also offers a distance education program for anyone unable to attend school full-time, which is spread out over three years.

Programs include the following courses and education:

Anatomy
Physiology
Pathology
Medical Terminology
Practical Massage
Hydrotherapy
Nutrition
Exercise Rehabilitation
Business Management
Research Literacy
Ethics & Professionalism
Self-care

If you are interested in becoming an RMT and want more information, I recommend that you visit one of the information sessions hosted by Wellington College. As I have no experience with the other colleges, I cannot speak to their standard, however I will share my experience during the time I spent at Wellington College, which I will post soon.

I hope you find this information useful. If you have any questions regarding my experience with enrollment, registration or other related topics, leave a comment below and I will be happy to answer to the best of my ability.
