Infant Massage

The Infant Massage Course instructed by Randi Nowicki is based on her training through the International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM) and her experience as a Registered Massage Therapist. The course consists of five classes held once per week, each approximately 90 minutes long, totaling 7.5 hours.

The course is intended for parents and caregivers of infants up to one year of age. Both parents are encouraged to attend and are welcome to bring other children to class. It is recommended that older children attending have something with which to occupy or entertain themselves.

Through the duration of the course you will not only learn massage techniques, but also when massage is safe and appropriate, and how to read your baby’s cues. A question that often arises is whether the instructor will be the one providing massage to the babies; at no point will this occur, as the purpose of the class is to teach parents how to massage their own little ones.

  • Interaction between parent and baby during massage helps to promote positive nurturing touch, non-verbal communication and bonding, and in turn develops trust, respect and confidence in each individual.
  • Infant massage is a wonderful way to spend one-on-one time with baby. It can be incorporated into your daily or weekly routine, whether you massage baby before bed to help them relax and sleep better or set aside time to spend with your little one after coming home from work.
  • Much like in adults, massage for infants stimulates the digestive, circulatory and immune systems. It can also help to develop bodily awareness for baby, and aid coordination and balance later in life. Because of these effects on the body, infant massage can promote healthy digestion and relief of various ailments such as gas, colic and growing pain.
  • Many first-time moms and dads lack confidence when it comes to caring for their new baby. Attending an infant massage class is a great way to boost confidence, and learning in a group setting provides stay-at-home parents an excuse to get out and socialize, giving them the opportunity to make new friends and create a support network.

“Weight gain is the most consistent outcome associated with preterm infant massage. One explanation put forward for this weight gain is the separate finding that significantly lower levels of energy and stress behaviour were expended among preterm babies in the intervention groups, which meant that they were able to ‘sleep and grow’.”

What to Expect

Classes take place seated on the floor so you are asked to bring a yoga mat or blanket to sit on and a pillow for baby to lie on, as well as any other items that you would normally need for baby. Oil will be provided but you are free to bring your own if you know that your child has allergies or sensitivities; if this is the case please be sure to use oil, not lotion.

At the end of class each day, snacks and drinks will be provided and parents will have the opportunity to discuss, ask questions and get to know one another.
